How many days do you need for Pontedera and around?
One day is enough for Pontedera. With a weekend (2–3 days) you can add the Valdera villages and an art city such as Pisa or Volterra. With 4–5 days, using Pontedera as a base, you can cover much of Tuscany by train.
Why use Pontedera as a base for Tuscany?
It sits in the middle of the Pisa–Florence railway: you reach Pisa in ~20 minutes, Lucca and Florence in under an hour. Hotels cost less than in the art cities and you avoid traffic and restricted-traffic zones.
Can you visit Tuscany from Pontedera without a car?
Yes, for the main cities: Pisa, Lucca, Florence and Empoli are very easy by train. For Volterra and the Valdera villages a car is still recommended.
